Bio

Spencer Striker, PhD | Bio

Spencer Striker, PhDis a digital learning designer, producer, and Professor of Digital Media Design at Northwestern University in Qatar. For more than twenty years, he has worked on the applied side of games and learning: building real products, leading international creative teams, and shipping award-winning experiences used by learners around the world.

His portfolio, produced under the Spencer Striker Digital Learning banner, spans mobile games, interactive narratives, virtual reality, and podcasts, including the Anthem Award-winning Chaos Corp | Troll Farm Simulator, the NEH-funded History Adventures series, Dr. Sara | Disease Detective, and Plague of Athens VR. His work is distinguished by a sustained record of competitive external funding, with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Science Foundation, the Qatar National Research Fund, the Qatar Research, Development and Innovation Council, and the Doha Film Institute, and by major design recognition including the Anthem Awards, the Webby Awards, the Davey Awards, the Horizon Interactive Awards, and the Reimagine Education Awards.

Everything he makes is released free, for anyone to use, in any setting. People often reach out assuming there is a price, and are surprised to learn they can simply download the work and use it right away. That is by design.

His expertise runs along two connected tracks. The first is building products that use digital learning design to teach subjects like media literacy, public health, STEM, and history, primarily for K-12 and lower-division college audiences. The second is teaching production at the university level: 2D and 3D design, sound design, web design, podcasting, AI tools for digital media design, and vibe coding. Both tracks feed the same core conviction: that learning sticks when it is experienced, and that relevance and context are the engine of game-based learning.

Before academia, Spencer was the founding Creative Director of Galxyz, a venture-backed Silicon Valley learning game studio whose investors included Andreessen Horowitz and Emerson Collective, and the co-founder of the Media Arts & Game Development program at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. His intellectual lineage traces to the games and learning tradition at the University of Wisconsin, and his own contribution lives firmly on the applied side: the work itself.
